The police detained four minors on Tuesday for allegedly setting fire in the Gangolihat forest range in Pithoragarh district. The four minor boys had set fire in the Gangolihat range on May 3. They were burning some trash and dried leaves on Friday but the fire soon spread and destroyed a big part of the forest, a senior police official from Pithoragarh told The Pioneer. He said that an FIR was lodged against the accused but it was found during the investigation that the fire was set by some local teenagers. The police detained them on Tuesday and inquired about the incident as per the rules for juvenile offenders. They claimed that they were just burning some trash and leaves but the fire suddenly went out of control and spread in the area. The officer said that the police will take further action accordingly as per the law for juvenile offenders. The police have also appealed to the locals to refrain from burning anything in open areas that can potentially cause forest fires, he added.
