A man allegedly killed a woman and then committed suicide by jumping into the Chilla canal in Rishikesh. The victim is the daughter of a police sub inspector currently posted in Dehradun. The victim Arti Dabral and the accused Shailendra Bhatt were both living in Rishikesh. Her body was found in the Chhidderwala area on Monday morning with a deep wound in the neck, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that Dabral was a teacher in a private school in Rishikesh and Bhatt belonged to Tehri and was also living with his sister in Rishikesh for the past five to seven years to prepare for government recruitment examinations. The family of the woman revealed to the police during the inquiry that she left the home at about 6 PM on Sunday stating she was going to a friend’s birthday party. As per the police investigation, Bhatt had also left his house at about 5 PM. When he did not return home till late at night, his sister registered a missing person complaint at Rishikesh police station. Bhatt’s friend later informed his sister that he allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the canal. Singh said that the diving team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) along with the Water police started searching for the body in the afternoon. The authorities were yet to find the body till late evening on Monday. The SSP said that the police teams have been formed to investigate the matter. Bhatt’s sister told the police that her brother had known the victim for the past six years. However, the police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the alleged murder. The police are analysing CCTV footage and other evidence to know how and why the man killed the woman, he added.
