Around 600 drivers of Vikrams, minibuses and city buses have applied for the unique identity card to be issued by the traffic police in Dehradun. The police are verifying their details and will soon start issuing cards to the drivers, said the circle officer of traffic police of Dehradun Anuj Arya.
The traffic police started this initiative to make a small community of verified drivers in the district to ensure the proper operation of public transport vehicles as well as to trace criminal activity done via these vehicles or drivers. He said that this ID card will display information about the driver which he/she will have to carry with themselves. If they abandon a vehicle or the vehicle gets seized due to irresponsibility, their ID will be cancelled.
The other owners will not give them a job without the ID card issued by traffic police, said the CO. According to him, the union leaders of Vikrams, mini buses and city buses are quite happy with this initiative as it helps them to identify shady drivers. “The union leaders informed us that when they asked the drivers to submit their documents to be sent to traffic police to get the ID, some drivers appeared apprehensive and some denied. This helped them to understand that the person might be shady and they must take action accordingly,” said Arya.
He said that the traffic police expect to get 1,200 to 1,500 applications from drivers by the end of this month. “We have received about 600 applications that mostly include drivers of Vikrams and mini buses. We will start issuing them by the weekend,” added Arya.
