SC lifts HC’s stay on 30 % reservation for women in government jobs

In what can be termed as a major relief for the Uttarakhand government, the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday lifted the stay imposed by the Uttarakhand High Court (HC) on the order of the Uttarakhand government granting 30 per cent horizontal reservation to the women having domicile of the State in the government jobs of the state. The order was passed by an SC bench of Justice SA Nazeer and Justice V Ramasubramanian on the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Uttarakhand government.
The State government had moved to the SC against the August 2022 order of Uttarakhand HC on the issue. The HC had ordered a stay on the government order (GO) of July 2006 by the Uttarakhand government by which 30 per cent reservation was provided to the women having domicile of the State in the State civil services and other jobs. The HC stay had affected the ongoing recruitment process in the government jobs and the State government was under pressure from various quarters on the issue. Opposition parties were attacking the State government for its allegedly poor advocacy in the HC and its failure to protect the interests of the women of the State. Apart from filing the SLP in the SC against the HC stay, the Uttarakhand government was planning to bring an ordinance for safeguarding the 30 per cent reservation for the women in State government jobs.
Expressing happiness on the SC order, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the State government is committed to protect the interests of the women of the State. He added that the government had made all preparations for bringing an ordinance for continuing the benefit of 30 per cent reservation to the women of the State.
