Vipin Rawat murder: Police officer suspended for negligence in probe

Chamoli resident Vipin Rawat who had sustained head injuries on November 25 following an altercation with some men died on Saturday. His death triggered a wave of protest on social media and a large number of people assembled in the hospital where his body was kept.
Acting swiftly the Uttarakhand police on the orders of chief minister suspended the in-charge of the Lakkhibagh police post under Patel Nagar police station Pravin Saini for showing laxity in the investigation.
On the night of November 25, Rawat had gone to Inamullah building with his friends to have dinner. Here he had an altercation with a group of youths during which one of them hit Rawat on the head with a baseball bat. He sustained serious injury on head and was rushed to CMI hospital and later was shifted to Mahant Indiresh hospital. The death of Rawat agitated many and they demanded action on the issue. The Badrinath MLA Rajendra Bhandari arrived in the hospital along with Congressmen and sat on a Dharna demanding registration of a case of murder and removal of Lakkhibagh police post in charge for allegedly sympathising with the alleged murderer. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara also joined the protesters in their Dharna. Speaking on the occasion, Mahara said that the deceased was a member of National Students Union of India (NSUI). He alleged that the accused was arrested only after the death of Rawat. Mahara said that the police are behaving in an autocratic manner and the law and order situation in the State has crashed.
