Haridwar police on Wednesday nabbed a man from Uttar Pradesh within 72 hours after he brutally murdered his wife. The man was suspicious of his wife’s character and had also allegedly attempted suicide days before committing the murder. The Haridwar senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the victim Radhika along with her husband Jagatpal lived in a house on rent in Shyampur area of the district. The police received a call from a woman on April 9 who informed that she has found a blood soaked body of her tenant Radhika in her room.
Following this, the police immediately reached the spot and found the deceased Radhika lying on the floor with deep wounds on both cheeks. Singh said that forensic teams were called at the scene who revealed that the murderer first strangulated the victim and then deeply wounded her cheeks with a sharp object. It also came to light while probing the neighbours that the husband Jagatpal has been missing since his wife’s murder which made him the prime suspect in the case. Considering the sensitivity of the case, the SSP formed a team under superintendent of police (city) Swatantra Kumar. He said that there was no other information available to police about the victim’s husband besides his name. The accused was also not carrying any mobile or any IDs which made it quite challenging for the police to trace him.
The SSP said that a police team was sent in the accused’s native district Budaun in UP to search for him where the police finally nabbed him from Roadways bus station. The husband revealed during the interrogation that he suspected his wife’s character who never used to listen to him. They both had a fight a few days ago before the murder when the husband had also allegedly attempted to slit his wrist, said Singh. The accused said that he strangled his wife on the night of April 8 with a Dupatta and subsequently wounded her cheeks with a knife in rage. The police have recovered the Dupatta and the knife used in the murder, added SSP.
