The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) approved giving the custody of a minor to her mother despite the girl’s claims that she was pushing her into prostitution. However, the chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Dr Geeta Khanna said that the committee did not consult the commission about this decision and a meeting will be held for a final decision.
Talking to The Pioneer Khanna said, “Recently in Dehradun the case of a girl allegedly pushed into prostitution by her mother came to light. The daughter has told the commission that she does not wish to live with her mother. She further stated that her mother used to push her into prostitution to earn money and to please her mother’s boyfriends. The commission told the CWC to ensure that the girl is taken care of responsibly.”
She further said that it was reported that CWC had given the responsibility of the daughter to the mother. The decision is not final and a meeting will be held to finalise the decision, she added.
Khanna said that such cases of family members pushing minors into prostitution are rising at an alarming rate across the State. She said that the commission is always there to help children in such cases. Apart from this, it is the responsibility of every citizen to raise their voices in such cases, she added.
