MCD imposes Rs five lakh penalty on Vishal Mega Mart

Friday, 29 SEPTEMBER 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Thursday imposed a penalty of Rs five lakh on Haridwar Road situated Vishal Mega Mart after finding dengue-causing mosquito larvae in the premises, said the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna. He said that the sanitation teams on Thursday checked the premises of the mart where they found that water releasing from an AC installed inside the building was being disposed of in the open area. Besides this, they also observed that various kinds of garbage was scattered in and around the mart as the management there had not put up any dustbins as per the rules. The teams also found dengue-causing mosquito larvae near the water accumulated in the garbage dumping site. Considering such serious violations under Solid Waste Management (SWM) rules, the corporation imposed a penalty of Rs five lakh on the mart’s management, said Khanna. “We put up a notice of challan of Rs five lakh outside the mart’s building. We instructed the management to deposit the penalty within three days in MCD or else, it will be recovered with the help of authorities concerned via a recovery challan (RC),” he said. He informed that the teams also destroyed the larvae found on the premises by spraying larvicide. The team also conducted another inspection in Mothorowala on Thursday after receiving complaints from a local against a plot owner who was purportedly gathering and storing single-use plastic as scrap in the open, said Khanna. He said that the team reached the spot to verify the claims which were found to be true. Such accumulation of single-use plastic is a violation of SWM rules and against the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Considering this, the corporation imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the owner and directed him to vacate the plot within three working days, added Khanna. The corporation has collected over Rs 16 lakh as a penalty from about 400 establishments in a month under their anti-dengue drive. Khanna said that the corporation has been consistently running  drives against dengue and seeking support from the public to prevent dengue from spreading in the city.
