The chairperson of Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal directed the police to take strict action in cases of sudden disappearances of women which have recently increased across the State. She said this after a married woman who had been missing for the past 24 days was found by police.

Kandwal informed that a case of a married woman from Gumaniwala, Rishikesh reported missing had recently come to light on September 11. The family members lodged a report at the police station, accusing a woman from the neighbourhood of luring the married woman and taking her elsewhere. The police initiated an investigation. However, as the woman’s whereabouts remained unknown for several days, the family members contacted Kandwal and informed her about the situation. In response, she asked the police to take strict action and also activated the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit to assist in locating the said woman. After 24 days, the woman’s location was successfully traced, and she was rescued from Gonda yesterday, she added.

She further said that she felt proud of the police team for rescuing the women and said that such cases have started increasing which must curbed. Concerning such cases in the State the police must take strict action. Apart from this, she instructed the Rishikesh police to thoroughly investigate the matter, particularly if a woman from the neighborhood had enticed and transported another woman to a distant location. It is imperative that this individual be thoroughly investigated, she added.
