Stating that a 16-year-old girl delivered a baby after being allegedly raped months ago, the chairperson of Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal directed the Rishikesh police to take strict action in the matter. She informed that the minor’s family brought her to the hospital due to complaints of stomach pain and it was ascertained during the examination that the pain was being caused by pregnancy. The doctors referred her to a higher centre for further treatment, where she gave birth. The victim has stated that she was raped by an unknown individual in January, Kandwal added.

She further said that after learning of the situation she phoned the Rishikesh police station officer Khushiram Pandey. The USCW chief directed Pandey to take strict action in the case. Pandey informed her that a case had been filed against an unidentified individual following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family. Additionally, Kandwal indicated that the perpetrator will be apprehended expeditiously after conducting a DNA test on the child while keeping other suspects under investigation.

Kandwal said that such a matter in the State is shameful.  She asserted that those who engage in such crimes should not go unpunished. The police force should diligently locate the responsible party without delay and work for severe punitive actions against the guilty, she added.
