The festive season is incomplete without a delicious spread of treats. However, experts have emphasised the importance of controlling the consumption of oily foods and sweets during the festive season. Overindulgence in these foods can have negative effects on the body, particularly for individuals with diabetes or heart conditions. It is advisable to limit the intake of sweets during the festive season for the sake of health, said the experts.
Dehradun-based dietician Richa Kukreti stressed the importance of mindful eating during the festive season. She said, “It is important for people, especially the elderly and children, to exercise caution when consuming excessive amounts of sweets and oily foods during the festive season. Consuming too many sweets during the festive season may lead to teenage girls developing PCOD. Further, individuals with diabetes should avoid consuming sweets, as it will directly impact their blood sugar levels.”
She further added that excessive consumption of sweets during the festive season can also pose cholesterol-related problems. So, it is better for individuals to consume sweets and oily foods in moderation during this time. Additionally, it is better to opt for healthier alternatives whenever possible. Apart from this, try to opt for physical exercise during the festive season as much as possible, Kukreti added.
Senior physician at the district hospital Dr Pravin Panwar said consumption of oily food and sweets tends to increase, particularly during the festive season. However, excessive and regular intake of these foods can lead to acidity problems and negatively impact the sugar levels in individuals. It is crucial for individuals with diabetes and heart conditions to exercise extra caution during this festive period, as the consumption of oily food and sweets can exacerbate their heart-related issues. Further, the overconsumption of sweets during the festive season can contribute to problems like elevated cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. So, it is recommended that people should avoid such foods during the festive season, he added.
