Considering the high number of deaths in human-wildlife conflict, the Kumaon commissioner Deepak Rawat directed the Forest department and district magistrates of the division to make an effective plan to prevent such incidents. Rawat held a meeting in Nainital in which he reviewed the district-wise number of injuries, deaths and associated cases under human- wildlife conflict since last year.
Officials informed him that a total of 37 people have died in the Kumaon division since last year and 151 people sustained injuries in human-wildlife conflict. The authorities concerned issued an amount of Rs 19.45 lakh to the victims as per the rules. The rate of deaths due to human-wildlife conflict is higher in the Kumaon division than in the Garhwal division, as per the data. After reviewing the data, the commissioner directed the departments concerned to work on making a plan to prevent incidents of human-wildlife conflict. He also asked all divisional forest officers and DMs to work together to prevent incidents of arson that also lead to some fatal incidents.
Besides this, Rawat also reviewed works related to transport and road safety. He instructed the police and Transport department to conduct a joint intensive checking campaign to ensure law and order is maintained in every district, especially at night. He also ordered regular verification of people coming from outside and doing business without the permission of the local bodies. Officials were instructed to analyse road accidents usually occurring on National Highways, State Highways and main roads in detail to find the responsible factors. It will help the authorities to take effective measures accordingly to prevent accidents.
