Experts have stated that by taking essential precautions during the festival of colours, individuals can mitigate the potential health risks associated with Holi. With the festival approaching, many are concerned about how to protect their skin and eyes from the colours. In light of this, doctors here said that every year the cases of skin and eye infections are witnessed by them following Holi celebrations.
Commenting about the precautions, skin specialist at the district hospital Dr Anil Arya said that every year he comes across numerous cases of skin infections following the Holi festival. “The chemical components like lead and mercury present in synthetic colours are known to be harmful and can pose risks to the skin. Individuals who use such colours may experience skin allergies which manifest as red rashes, acne and itching. To prevent these skin allergies caused by harmful colours, it is advised that individuals apply moisturiser, oil or Vaseline before coming into contact with the colours to provide a protective layer for the skin,” he said. Arya further said that using herbal colours is the best option for celebrating a safe Holi. Additionally, he advised against self-treating skin allergies and urged people to seek medical advice to avoid escalation of the problem. He emphasised that taking precautions can effectively protect individuals from post-Holi allergies.
Senior eye specialist at Government Doon Medical College hospital Dr Sushil Ojha said that the content of colours can be harsh on the eyes and may lead to various types of eye infections. He emphasised the importance of taking proper precautions to prevent eye infections. During Holi celebrations, people of all ages should wear protective eyewear to prevent eye infections. Ojha stated that individuals often experience irritation from the colours during Holi, which can worsen when they rub their eyes. Anyone who gets colours in their eyes should rinse them with water instead of rubbing them. He further highlighted that the common symptoms of eye infection due to Holi colours include redness, watery eyes and itching. Individuals experiencing symptoms of eye infection should seek immediate medical attention to avoid complications in the eyes, he added.
