Displaying enthusiasm for the democratic process, many first-time voters flocked to polling booths in Dehradun on Friday to cast their votes in the Lok Sabha elections. With 1,45,220 new voters registered in Uttarakhand during this election, the young voters cast their votes for their better future and development. During the early hours of the morning, many polling booths witnessed a significant turnout of first-time voters. College student and first-time voter Priyanka Kumari said that she had already planned to visit the polling booth early in the morning once the voting commenced. She expressed her hopes that the elected candidate would prioritise youth development initiatives like reservation systems, bolstering education and enhancing employment opportunities.
Another first-time voter Sandeep Chauhan expressed a mix of nerves and excitement about taking part in the democratic process. In addition, he mentioned feeling a strong sense of responsibility and empowerment when casting his vote, understanding the impact his voice could have on shaping the nation. He further stressed the importance of the issue of unemployment being addressed by political parties post-election results.
Meanwhile, it was also observed that some first-time voters were unaware of the issues that should be addressed by the parties after the election. Manisha Verma said, “’I am voting for the first time and my main aim is to understand how voting is conducted and what an electronic voting machine looks like.” She further said that she is not aware of current issues and the past work of political parties. She cast her vote purely out of excitement to play a role in selecting the government.
