Among the multitudes of devotees undertaking the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib in Chamoli district, there are some elements who have been raising ruckus and breaking the law blatantly. Since the reopening of Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara on May 25, there have been at least two cases wherein six people visiting the shrine have been jailed for breaking the law. Some of these accused did not spare even the security personnel and allegedly indulged in violence with them.
In the first case on May 27, some members reportedly of the Sikh community had an altercation with a Home Guard posted for guarding the Gurudwara. The accused allegedly attacked the uniformed personnel with their Kirpan (ceremonial dagger). The police registered a case in the Govindghat police station and arrested three accused. In the second case, three men returning from the Gurudwara allegedly attacked a bus driver for reported delay in letting them pass on a narrow mountain road. The bus driver was taking pilgrims back from Badrinath to Haridwar when he was attacked by the accused who allegedly injured him after assaulting him with swords. The local police registered a case against the three accused and sent them to jail.
