Violations continue in city buses, tickets not provided to commuters while drivers & conductors shun uniforms

Various violations by city bus drivers and conductors continue to pose problems for commuters. The majority of the bus drivers and conductors do not wear the uniforms they are supposed to wear as per the regulations. Further, on most routes, the commuters are not provided tickets after paying the fare. The city bus union members claim that they conduct regular checks to prevent such violations but such issues persist also due to the apathy of the commuters.

A city bus driver Ashok Kumar said that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) doesn’t conduct regular inspections to check for violations. As a result, the drivers and conductors are apathetic towards wearing a uniform. On the subject of commuters not being provided tickets, he said that the commuters themselves seldom ask for a ticket.

A Roadways bus driver also said that the authorities do not focus that much on enforcement of the rules. In such a situation, the drivers and conductors do not bother to wear uniforms as stipulated by the rules. The uniform is not a major issue as even the passengers are not bothered about it, he added.

Niharika Tomar, who frequently commutes by city bus said that the conductors do not provide tickets after a passenger pays the fare. Tickets are provided in Roadways buses but not in private buses.

Dehradun Mahanagar City Bus Sewa Society president Vijay Vardhan Dandriyal said that office bearers of the city bus union conduct frequent inspections to check whether the driver and conductor are wearing uniforms and to check if tickets are being provided to the commuters. “We have provided uniforms and tickets to the staff and have also penalised some for not using these. However, many of the drivers and conductors continue to flout the regulations,” he said.
