To ensure safety of both the hospital staffers and patients, the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) has raised the presence of security guards at the emergency ward. Informing this on Wednesday, the head of the emergency department who has recently assumed charge, Dr NS Bisht said that security is being strengthened for the staff members and the patients. “We were concerned with the scant security issue and crowd management due to understaffing in the emergency ward,” he said.
He underscored the diverse range of patients, including those with alcohol-related issues and disruptive behaviour, visiting the ward, necessitating the recent initiative to deploy more security personnel to safeguard the well-being of all patients and staffers.
He further informed that earlier there were only two security guards assigned to the task of overseeing the patients visiting the emergency ward. “However, in the interest of safety and with the approval of the hospital administration, we have raised the number of security guards to five. This ensures that security guards are now stationed at every entrance and exit point in the hospital’s emergency wards,” he added.
Bisht said that the hiked presence of security guards has significantly improved crowd management in the emergency ward.
To recall, the recent incident of two persons brandishing a firearm at a doctor in the emergency ward prompted many post- graduate doctors at the hospital to demand enhanced security measures, especially in the emergency ward.
Taking note of the concern, the medical superintendent at GDMC, Dr Anurag Aggarwal had assured that the number of security guards in the hospital premises, particularly at the emergency ward, would be raised. He had also instructed the security guards to remain all the more vigilant round the clock to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
