Bharatiya Janata Party national spokesman Pratyush Kant said that the manner in which the the alleged rape and murder of a young lady doctor in West Bengal has been handled shows that law and order is dead in the State. Addressing the media at the BJP State office here on Friday, he said that the incident in Kolkata is not a regional issue as everybody in the nation is concerned and talking about it. He also questioned the silence of the INDI Alliance leaders on this issue.

Kant said that following the murder of the lady doctor, he authorities first told her family members that she had committed suicide. Later, thousands of goons barged into the emergency ward of the hospital where they wreaked destruction. “Is this a major conspiracy to shield the culprits? The State government is meant to support the victim and ensure justice but the scenario seems to be the opposite in this case. The Calcutta High Court has been issuing directions almost daily and pulling up the government. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi who used to talk a lot about democracy and women empowerment have remained largely silent on this heinous crime. The INDI Alliance leaders have remained silent on this even as people across the nation have expressed their concern” he said.

Kant further questioned why the principal of the medical college was not questioned by the police and why the police initially stated that it was a suicide case. Alleging that a major conspiracy is being orchestrated, he questioned what connection the West Bengal government has to those involved in this case. Kant further alleged that goons are committing crimes against women in West Bengal under the TMC government while the government is remaining silent. He stressed that those guilty in this case should receive the strictest punishment for the heinous crime.

Regarding the alleged rape and murder of a nurse in Udham Singh Nagar district, Kant said that the police had acted swiftly and apprehended the accused. The government should be seen standing with the victim instead of shielding the culprits to ensure that criminal elements fear the law, which is missing in West Bengal, he said.
