“Before educators can inspire and educate others, they must first turn their gaze inward. True fulfilment and the essence of life are derived from within, not from external achievements,” said the Indian philosopher, Vedanta teacher and author Acharya Prashant. He was addressing an event titled ‘Teaching: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Liberation’ commemorating the Teachers’ Day at BITS Pilani, Goa.
Expounding on what constitutes the essence of teaching, he said that teaching demands continuous introspection and a deep understanding of one’s own mind. “To be a true teacher, one must first attain a deep understanding of their own inner self. This journey transforms teaching into a path of self-liberation,” he added.
Averring that teaching at its core is fundamentally about the mind, the spiritual teacher said that it surpasses mere transmission of topics, theories or technological advancements. “These components are secondary to the true essence of teaching. With technology increasingly managing information dissemination, one must ask: What remains for the teacher?” he asked.
“If teachers view their role solely as providers of information they miss the deeper essence of their function. A teacher is a living example of engagement and depth. A true teacher immerses themselves fully in their subject and inspires students through their own passion and engagement,” Acharya Prashant observed.
