UPES hosts global summit ‘Himalaya Calling’

The three-day ‘Himalaya Calling: Global Summit on Challenges and Opportunities in the Himalayan Region’ concluded at UPES on Wednesday. Comprising keynote sessions, exhibitions and photography displays focused on the fragile Himalayan ecology, the event witnessed the participation of over 170 speakers, thought leaders and environmentalists across 18 sessions, engaging in vibrant discussions on sustainability, climate action and preservation of the Himalayan ecosystem.
The chancellor TERI and former secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of IndiaShailesh Nayak presented the keynote address on ‘Himalayan Environment: A Need for Preservation’. The key sessions were led by Padma ShrirecipientAnup Sah, Threesh Kapoor and Prof Uwe Truyen, focusing on the importance of sustainability in the Himalayas.
The former research director, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), V C Thakur delivered a keynote on ‘Earthquake Hazard in the Himalayan Region and Mitigation for Sustainable Development’. Speaking at the summit, the founder director, Himalayan Institute for Learning and Leadership (HILL) at UPES Jitendra K. Pandey said that thesummit is a major step forward in bringing global attention to the ecological importance of the Himalayas.
The summit’s final day featured the addresses by Padma BhushanAnil P Joshi, director general of the Uttarakhand State Council for Science & Technology (UCOST), Durgesh Pant, president, UPES, Sunil Rai and the vice- chancellor, UPESRam Sharma.
