The ophthalmology department of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital has successfully performed cataract surgery with lens transplant on a four-month-old baby Abdullah. Informing about this, senior eye specialist and professor at GDMC, Dr Sushil Ojha said that a family recently visited the hospital with their child. The family informed the doctors that when Abdullah was two months old, they noticed he was unresponsive to visual stimuli. Concerned, the family initially sought medical attention in Roorkee, where they were informed that Abdullah had white cataract. Given the high cost of treatment at a private hospital, about Rs 80,000, the family expressed their financial constraints. Subsequently, they visited AIIMS Rishikesh, where the diagnosis of cataract was confirmed. Faced with a long waiting period at AIIMS, the family then brought Abdullah to Doon Hospital, where he was registered for a complementary operation under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram.
He added that the GDMC team of the ophthalmology department successfully conducted the lens transplantation surgery. Typically, this surgery is performed as individuals age and require lens replacement. The surgery was completed in a single sitting once the white-to-white diameter was confirmed to be correct. Following the surgery, Abdullah’s bandages were removed the next day, and when he saw the light from a torch, he had a notable reaction, he said.
