College students in Dehradun rallied in protest towards the Clock Tower and burnt the Higher Education minister in effigy to protest against the failure of the authorities to hold student union elections in the government universities and colleges this year. The former president of the student union at DAV PG College, Siddharth Aggarwal, alleged that the State government is reluctant to hold the student union polls. Venting the frustration, the protesting students also burnt an effigy of the minister. Aggarwal warned that the students will intensify their protest if the government does not take action on this issue.
The former general secretary of DAV College Sumit Kumar pointed out that the Ministry of Higher Education had earlier released the academic calendar for the session but failed to implement it effectively. He opined that the democratic rights of students have been suppressed through conspiracy.
The student leaders have issued a warning to the government that if the student union elections are not conducted soon, they will be compelled to launch a vigorous protest, for which the government administration will bear full responsibility.
Meanwhile, considerable traffic congestion was caused on the busy roads merging at the Clock Tower due to the protest rally of the students.
