Post-monsoon rainfall deficit causing above normal temperatures in U’khand

Wednesday, 30 OCTOBER 2024  | PNS | DEHRADUN

A substantial deficiency in post-monsoon rainfall in Uttarakhand has resulted in the temperatures remaining above normal even as October is about to end. On Tuesday, both the maximum and minimum temperatures were four degrees Celsius above normal in Dehradun while the maximum was five degrees above normal in Mukteshwar. There has been insignificant rain in the State and snowfall in the higher reaches so far this month.

The cold generally starts to set in during October but this year, the maximum and minimum temperatures have remained a few notches above normal in Dehradun and other places in the State. The State meteorological centre director Bikram Singh said that the rainfall during the post-monsoon season has been substantially less this year. “During the post-monsoon season which lasts from October to December, the rainfall has been a couple of millimetres whereas the normal rainfall during this season is about 30 millimetres. So far, there is a 95 per cent deficiency in the rainfall in this period. The deficit in rainfall during this period is a major reason for the temperatures remaining above normal. The maximum and minimum temperatures have remained two to three degrees Celsius above normal in various parts of the State during October and had even reached four degrees above normal. There does not appear to be any significant activity in store during the next 10 days,” Singh said. Regarding the impact of this weather pattern on agriculture, he said that the crop being harvested will not be affected though if the rainfall deficit continues, dry land conditions may pose issues during sowing of the next crop.

For Wednesday, the State meteorological centre has forecast that very light to light rain is likely to occur at isolated places in Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts while dry weather is likely to prevail in remaining districts. Dehradun is likely to witness a mainly clear to partly cloudy sky with mist/haze likely to occur during the morning hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 31 degrees Celsius and 18 degrees Celsius respectively on Wednesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded on Tuesday were 31.4 degrees Celsius and 17.9 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 31.6 degrees Celsius and 19 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 23.5 degrees Celsius and 10.3 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 22.6 degrees Celsius and 12.9 degrees Celsius in New Tehri.
