Immediate intervention needed to prevent atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh: Rawat

Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government should immediately intervene on the issue of atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh. He said that the Indian government should use strong diplomacy and its international relationships to deal with the Bangladesh situation.

Addressing a seminar on the occasion of Vijay Diwas  on Monday, the former CM said that on this date in the year 1971 the bravery of Indian soldiers forced more than 90,000 personnel of Pakistan Army to surrender. The day changed the history and geography of the Indian subcontinent. Rawat said that the then PM of India Indira Gandhi stood like a rock and remained firm even as the USA threatened to dispatch its seventh fleet. He said that the disturbing events in Bangladesh have put the security of the country at the risk.

 Rawat said that December 16, 1971  is the story of valour of Indian Armed forces and reflected strong leadership and will power of former PM Indira Gandhi and the then defence minister Jagjivan Ram.

CPI leader Samar Bhandari said that the RAW helped in training of guerillas against the Pakistan army in the Bangladesh war. Samajwadi Party leader SN Sachan said that in 1971 the President of Pakistan Yahya Khan handed over the responsibility to remove discontentment in eastern Pakistan to General Tikka Khan. He tried to solve the issue by using pressure tactics which helped in deteriorating the situation.

Comrade Jagdish Kukreti said that in 1971 the Indian PM Gandhi supported Mukti Vahini to liberate Bangladesh.

 The vice president of Uttarakhand Congress Surendra Kumar was the convener of the programme.

The leaders and prominent personalities paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 war in the programme.
