Mayor orders cancellation of Watergrace contract over sanitation workers’ strike

PNS | DEHRADUN

Dehradun nayor Saurabh Thapliyal has ordered the termination of the contract with Watergrace Company after repeated strikes by door-to-door sanitation workers in 47 wards of the city due to non-payment of salaries.

The mayor has also directed officials to seize the company’s security deposit and bank guarantee and ensure that workers receive their pending salaries through the same funds. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Thapliyal and Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal. The meeting was held with sanitation workers, including vehicle drivers and helpers, who have been facing delays in salary payments, leading to frequent strikes.

The workers expressed their frustration, stating that they were forced to go on strike multiple times as their salaries were not paid on time. Expressing dissatisfaction with the company’s performance and the disruption caused by the strikes, the mayor instructed officials to take over all sanitation responsibilities from Watergrace and have them managed directly by the municipal corporation.

Bansal also stated that failure of timely garbage collection in the 47 wards had led to increasing public inconvenience, prompting the administration to take strict action against the company. She stated that with this move, the corporation aims to ensure better waste management and timely payment of workers, preventing further disruptions in garbage collection across the city.
