Low turnout on first day as parents adopt wait and watch attitude in permitting their wards
The schools in Uttarakhand opened on Monday after a gap of 231 days. The schools were opened for the students of classes X and XII in view of their board examinations but the attendance on the first day was very less. The government and aided schools started operating on Monday even as most of the private schools remained closed. In his message to the students and parents on the first day of opening of schools, the education minister Arvind Pandey said that the teachers are requested to take care of themselves and students from the Covid-19. He appealed all the stakeholders to follow the guidelines issued by the administration. In view of the pandemic of the Covid-19, the schools were closed in the state on March 14 in Uttarakhand.
On the first day, the classrooms wore a different look. In the new plan the students were seated far apart to ensure the necessary social distancing is observed. The schools were sanitised and the students, teachers and other staff members were wearing masks.
Though the attendance on the first day in the schools was very less, those who attended the classes looked enthused. “I am very happy that the schools have opened. The students were facing problems in the online classes as they are not the alternative of real classes. I have compiled a list of the topics which I had difficulty in understanding so that they can be discussed with the teacher concerned,’’ said a class XII student of an aided school located in Dehradun.
As per the guideline only the students of classes X and XII can come to the schools after their parents give consent. The secretary education, R Meenakshi Sundaram has directed the education director and all nodal officers to maintain extra vigil. The education department has issued standard operating procedure (SoP) for opening of schools and appointed the Principals of all the schools as nodal officers. These nodal officers would be responsible for ensuring that the norms are followed in the opening of schools. In Uttarakhand there are more than six lakh students in 3791 government, aided and private schools.
