Full-fledged door to door garbage picking service still a far cry

Though the Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ recently inaugurated the door to door garbage collection service in the new wards, the MCD still needs one month’s time to develop this initiative into full-fledged service across the city. One of the two companies hired has started the door to door garbage picking service in the wards Nathanpur-I and Nathanpur-II from Monday. However, the companies need at least one month to make all the arrangements to start 100 percent door to door service in the new wards. As informed by the chief municipal health officer, Dr Kailash Joshi, the companies need ample vehicles, equipment and manpower to manage the sanitation facilities.

The garbage collected by the new company from the two wards is currently being disposed at the garbage transfer station. As per the agreement signed between the companies and the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD), the companies will have to establish at least four Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in the new wards to recycle the maximum generated waste. For the same purpose, the companies are in process of selecting locations in various wards, informed Joshi. “Both the companies were selected just recently and they will take at least one month to make all the crucial arrangements to manage sanitation facilities in the new wards,” asserted Joshi. He also pointed out that once the full-fledged door to door service will start, it will be compulsory for every resident of each ward to dispose of their domestic garbage through this service only or else, a hefty fine will be imposed against the offenders.
