Reward citizens who comply with traffic rules: DM

Expressing his concern over the rising rate of road accidents in the district, Dehradun district magistrate R Rajesh Kumar directed the officials of the Transport department and traffic police to work towards improving conditions in 49 accident prone areas.He also directed officials of the departments concerned to take strict action against the traffic rules violators and reward those citizens who properly follow the traffic rules to acknowledge their efforts.

Following his recent inspection of traffic management in some main routes of the city, Kumar conducted a district level meeting of Road Safety Committee on Tuesday which was attended by the officials of the Transport department, traffic police, the Public Works Department (PWD) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) among others.

The Transport department officials revealed during the presentation in the meeting that a total of 130 accidents occurred from January to June this year in which 96 people were severely injured while 55 people died. According to them, overspeeding, rash driving and driving in the wrong direction were the main causes of most of the accidents. The DM was also made aware of 49 black spots across the district which are highly vulnerable to road accidents. According to the officials, the departments have improved the condition of 26 black spots in the district while work is underway on the remaining 23 black spots. After reviewing all the points, the DM directed the officials concerned to identify major reasons for road accidents and take appropriate action to prevent them. He instructed PWD officials to install light speed breakers in accident prone areas besides directing officials to use online mode to impose penalties for traffic rules violation in the smart city area.
