A gate of Bhimgoda Barrage in Haridwar damaged by release of excess water from Srinagar dam

In latest Uttarakhand news, a gate of the Bhimgoda Barrage in Haridwar was damaged as excess water was released from the dam in Srinagar. Subsequently, the water level of Ganga crossed the warning mark in Haridwar. The district administration issued an alert for the villagers living close to Ganga. With relentless rain pounding the mountainous areas of the State throughout the day, the water level of Ganga kept on rising and touched the warning mark in late evening. Notably, earlier, the water of the swelling river had gushed into the farm fields close to Ganga. The farm fields getting submerged in river water, the farmers are incurring huge loss with crops getting destroyed.
It is learnt that while normally 80,000 cusecs water is released from the Srinagar dam the volume of water released from the dam suddenly rose to over two lakh cusecs. The Haridwar district irrigation officers had said that though the excess release of water from Srinagar dam had done no damage they continued monitoring the water level of the river round the clock. However, things turned for the worse in late evening as the gate number ten of Bhimgoda Barrage was damaged. Subsequently, the water level rose to 293.15 metre while the warning mark is 293 metre. In view of the worsening situation, the district administration and police alerted through announcement those who are living close to the river. Speaking on the matter, the Haridwar district disaster management officer Meera Kumar said that the water level of Ganga is being constantly monitored. She further said that the people have been asked to stay away from swollen Ganga, adding that every step has been taken by the administration to combat any emergency situation if it arises.
