The police have registered a case against unidentified persons and are pursuing it a day after the driver of a mechanical excavator being used in an anti-encroachment drive of the Municipal Corporation of Roorkee (MCR) was injured by stone pelters.
On Thursday, the MCR conducted an anti-encroachment drive in Machhi Mohalla. During the drive, a shopkeeper was hurt accidently after which some persons began pelting stones at the JCB with its driver also being assaulted. The personnel of the corporation had to return from the site without completing their action due to the violent flare up.
Additional superintendent of police Rekha Yadav said that unknown rioters who were pelting stones at the JCB and beating its driver during the anti-encroachment drive were hindering the removal of encroachments. A case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code against them. Efforts are underway to identify the miscreants through CCTV camera footage and other sources, she said.
Meanwhile, authorities said that the anti-encroachment drive will be resumed from Tuesday and notices will be issued to the local shopkeepers before that.
