The national highway to Badrinath was closed to traffic after heavy debris fell on the road from the mountainside near Helang on Thursday. The debris first fell on the road at about 3 PM. The traffic was blocked by the debris and queues of vehicles formed on both sides of the blockage.
Mechanical excavators were deployed and the debris were cleared to restore traffic on the road by about 5 PM. However, the traffic movement could continue for about one hour after which heavy debris once again fell on the road at about 6 PM. The highway was closed to traffic and efforts were underway to clear the debris till the time of this report being filed.
