The victory of the BJP candidate Parvati Dass in the Bageshwar Assembly by-election has come as a major boost for the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami whose reputation was at stake in Bageshwar. The narrow margin of victory however has given a wake-up call to the ruling BJP to keep its house in order ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha election scheduled next year. Observers point out that the extensive campaign by chief minister Dhami in Bageshwar in the last two days of the campaigning period played an important role in ensuring the party candidate’s victory.
Dhami held road-shows at places like Garud and Bageshwar in the last two days of the elections. His public meetings were also well attended during which he made an emotional appeal to the people to vote for the developmental projects taken by late MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Dass. He also assured the people of Bageshwar that the projects initiated by the late MLA will be completed on time. “The CM took on himself the task of ensuring victory of Parvati Dass and he vigorously campaigned there. His presence also enthused the party workers and it helped the BJP,’’ said an observer.
The ruling BJP claimed that the victory is a positive vote of the people of Bageshwar on developmental policies being undertaken by Dhami which are being accepted by the public.
The positive result in Bageshwar has come as a big boost for Dhami and his stature has got further enhanced in the ruling party. Bageshwar by election was necessitated by the death of four-time MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Dass. In an attempt to garner more votes the BJP gave ticket to Parvati Dass, the widow of Chandan Ram Dass.
