Following the directives of the Uttarkashi superintendent of police Arpan Yaduvanshi to step up operations against movement of cash during electioneering, the district police impounded cash worth Rs 27 lakh during a raid on Wednesday.
A senior district police officer said that a joint team of police under the supervision of the district election nodal officer Prashant Kumar recovered the cash from a resident of Garh village identified as Balveer Singh after he failed to satisfy the cops on the source of the cash and the purpose of travelling with the cash. The cash seized was later handed over to the income tax department for further investigation.
The officer further said that they are now investigating the matter seriously. He also appealed to the people to report once they come across any suspicious activity. “Stern actions will be taken against the carrier of the cash if probe confirms that the cash is being carried for election purposes, to entice voters, in accordance with the appropriate provisions of law,” he said, adding that violation of the Election Commission rules amounts to a serious offence and would be dealt with a heavy hand.
