In a significant achievement concerning India’s Chandrayaan 3 Mission, the Indian space scientists have successfully separated the spacecraft’s lander module from its propulsion module. Now, the lander will head towards the Moon on its own. It is scheduled to soft-land on the Moon’s surface on August 23, according to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). If this soft-landing is successful India will be the fourth country in the world after the USA, Soviet Union and China to achieve this feat. Notably, the spacecraft was launched on July 14 and entered into the lunar orbit on August 5 after which orbit reduction maneuvers were carried out on August 6, 9, 14 and 16. Its modules were separated on August 17 ahead of its expected soft-landing on the Moon’s surface on August 23.
