Congress campaign lacked lustre of star campaigners in U’khand

Wednesday, 24 APRIL 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

After the end of polling in the five Lok Sabha constituencies of the State, the leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress are making claims of the victories of their candidates. The veracity of these claims would be verified only on June 4, the day of counting of the votes but it is evident that BJP pushed more star campaigners than its rival Congress in the election campaign in the State.

In the election campaign, the ruling BJP unleashed a battery of star campaigners in Uttarakhand. Prime Minister Narendra  Modi on whose face, performance and guarantees the BJP is contesting the LS election of 2024 addressed two mega rallies in Rudrapur (Udham Singh Nagar) and Rishikesh (Dehradun) in the State.

Apart from the PM, the BJP national president JP Nadda, Defence minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Union minister Smriti Irani, Union minister of State general (retd) VK Singh and Haryana  CM Nayab Singh Saini also addressed public meetings in Uttarakhand for BJP candidates.

On the other hand Priyanka Gandhi addressed two rallies (Roorkee and Ramnagar) in the State for the Congress party. Apart from her only the former deputy chief minister of Rajasthan Sachin Pilot was the only star campaigner of Congress who came to Uttarakhand.

In absence of star campaigners the candidates of Congress party were left to manage for themselves in their constituencies. To make matters worse, the tallest leader of the Congress party in Uttarakhand, the former CM Harish Rawat got stuck in Haridwar where his son Virendra Rawat was contesting on Congress ticket and could not campaign for Congress candidates in other constituencies.

CM Pushkar Singh Dhami led from the front in the campaign of the ruling BJP in the State. He addressed more than 90 public meetings and road shows in all parts of the State. He covered all the 70 assembly segments during the campaign. Interestingly the CM was in election mode even before the declaration of the LS elections. He had addressed beneficiary conclaves and women conclaves in all the districts of the State even before the declaration of the elections. The president of the State unit of BJP Mahendra Bhatt also addressed scores of public meetings in all parts of the State in support of the BJP candidates.
