The Uttarakhand government is likely to table the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the State Assembly. The three-day session of the Assembly is commencing from September 5 in Dehradun.
The expert committee set up by the State government to prepare a draft of the UCC has already submitted its report to the State government which is deliberating on the structure and shape of the UCC in the State. Giving an indication of the government’s plan, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in a programme here on Monday that the UCC will be implemented in the State in the current year itself. He said that the BJP had made a promise to bring UCC for the people of the State in the election of 2022. He said that the first decision taken by the State government after winning the election of 2022 was the setting up of an expert committee on UCC. The committee took suggestions from 2.33 lakh people and met representatives of different organisations, institutions and tribal population. Dhami said that the people of the country want that there should be UCC and it will start from Uttarakhand. He reiterated that the UCC will be implemented in the State this year as per the democratic process.
The expert committee on UCC was headed by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The other members of the committee were Justice (retd) Pramod Kohli, social worker Manu Gaur, former chief secretary of Uttarakhand Shatrughna Singh and vice chancellor of Doon University Surekha Dangwal. The committee was mandated to examine all existing and relevant laws regarding marriage, divorce, right for property, inheritance, adoption and protection for implementation of UCC in the state and it has dwelt on all these aspects in detail in its report.
