The Garhwal commissioner Sushil Kumar directed all district magistrates of the division on Monday to nominate nodal officers to take necessary actions for effective garbage disposal in their respective districts as per the order of the Uttarakhand High Court delivered on October 19. The court had stated while hearing on a public interest litigation seeking a ban on single-use plastic that no serious work is being done on the ground for solid waste disposal in the State and issued an email id- [email protected] on which local people can register garbage-related complaints.
The court had ordered the respective commissioners of the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions to ensure that steps are being taken by respective municipal bodies to resolve complaints within 48 hours. They have also been ordered to conduct ground surveys at town-by-town and village-by-village levels in association with district magistrates of all 13 districts to ensure solid waste management is being done efficiently. Following the orders, the Garhwal commissioner on Monday conducted a virtual meeting with all district magistrates of the division. He directed the DMs to nominate additional district magistrates (ADMs) as nodal officers to address the garbage disposal issues under every municipal body in coordination with respective municipal commissioners and officials concerned.
He directed the DMs to nominate respective Chief Development Officers (CDOs), District Development Officers (DDOs) and project director level officers as nodal officers for garbage disposal issues in rural areas. He also directed the DMs to nominate the respective divisional forest officers and chief executive officers (CEOs) as the nodal officers in forest areas and the Cantonment Board areas of the Garhwal division. He instructed the DMs to provide the contact details of all nominated officials to the Garhwal commissioner’s office as soon as possible. He also directed the officials concerned to ensure they regularly check their email ids to ensure immediate action is being taken against every complaint received through the email issued by the High Court.
