While addressing a national seminar on ‘Role of Medical Professionals in Road Safety Awareness in India’ jointly organised by Shri Venkateshwara University and Venkateshwara Institute of Medical Sciences on Friday, the Padmashree awardee orthopedic and spine surgeon, Dr B K S. Sanjay, who is also the president of AIIMS Guwahati, stressed on the active participation of medical professionals in road safety initiatives. “This may help prevent over 1.5 lakh accident-related deaths every year,” he told the doctors and students present at the seminar.

“The first one hour after any accident, small or big, is crucial during which medical professionals can save the life of the accident victims by providing them first aid and then sending them to a higher medical centre, given the condition of the victims. Besides, they may provide quick advanced treatment to the victims, depending on the medical requirements,” he added.

Addressing the seminar, the chairman of the Venkateshwara group of institutions, Sudhir Giri observed that road safety and prevention of road accidents is not the responsibility of the government alone but the responsibility of every citizen.  Echoing the view, the pro-chancellor of Shri Venkateshwara University, Rajeev Tyagi said that accidents could be averted if the people cared to  follow simple traffic rules like wearing helmet on two-wheelers and tying seat belt in cars. “We must refrain from drunk driving and using mobile phone while riding or driving. This is how lives of over four lakh people can be saved every year in India alone,” he noted.
