Factional bickering in Congress intensifies after ULB polls

War of words among the senior state Congress leaders following the urban local body (ULB) elections has further intensified. Miffed over the statements of the former chief minister and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Harish Rawat and the former Speaker of Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha  Govind Singh Kunjwal, the state  Congress chief Pritam Singh said on Friday that blaming him for the loss the party has suffered is unjust. “If this be the logic I deserve to be given credit for the seats from where the Congress candidates have been elected,” he said. Speaking to the media persons at the state party office on the day, Singh said that he was ready to take the poison if it helped the party. Reacting sharply to the statement made by Harish Rawat that he had been left out of the ticket distribution process by the state party brass, Singh said that Rawat had given the meeting convened to pick candidates for Garhwal region a miss despite the fact that he was in Dehradun at the time. “The same happened when the names were picked for the Kumaon. He chose to stay away, though he was invited to both the meetings,” he said. The PCC chief further said that he himself had toured across the state and campaigned extensively for the party candidates. “The results are not as bad as being projected. The party’s position has improved,” he said. In an oblique reference to Harish Rawat’s statement where he claimed that the Congress candidates had won where he had campaigned, Singh said that it was wrong to blame him for the losses the party had suffered. “Others are appropriating the credit of the victories,” he said. “The senior leaders were requested to campaign in the areas from where the demand came,” he added. “We won two out of the seven municipal corporations of the state, something which says that our position has improved. We drew a blank the last time.  More importantly, we snatched Haridwar from BJP.  In the municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats, the performance of the Congress was good,’’ he said. read more posts… Saturday, 24 November 2018 | PNS | Dehradun
