Despite efforts made by the successive governments, the employability of the graduates and post graduates being churned out the Indian education system has remained an issue of concern. The companies hiring the young graduates have always complained about their lack of employability.
Experts blame the education system which according to them is negatively impacting employability in today’s society. They emphasise that to address this pressing issue, skill-based education is of utmost importance. Further, the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) – 2020 must be executed diligently in order to effectively tackle the challenge of employability. It is imperative that the government prioritises vocational education and emphasizes skill development within the framework of the new policy said the experts.
Dwelling on the issue, the Lecturer at Government Inter College (GIC), Buranskhanda Ankit Joshi said, “In the present age, the issue of employability has emerged as a significant challenge primarily attributed to the inadequate state of the education system. Currently, the Indian education system predominantly emphasises theoretical learning rather than practical application. Consequently, companies often face difficulties in recruiting individuals who lack practical knowledge in their respective fields. However, recognizing this concern, the government has incorporated a new education policy that emphasises the need for vocational education. The primary focus of this policy is to promote skill-based education in India. So, I would say to overcome the challenge of employability, the implementation and monitoring of NEP-2020 is a must in India.”
Further the head of department (HoD) of Management at Doon University Professor HC Purohit said, “It is indeed accurate to state that the Indian education system has had a significant impact on employability. Although companies have witnessed advancements in technology over time, the incorporation of these technologies has not been adequately addressed in the curriculum. The introduction of the NEP-2020 holds the promise of bringing about various changes in the Indian education system. It is our expectation that this policy will swiftly transform employability in India. Moreover, it is the duty of every citizen to embrace this new education policy for the holistic growth of students and the nation.”
Human resource person at Starnext Softech, Aanchal Aggarwal said that the skill-based education system plays a very important role in terms of employability. While hiring the freshers in our company, we find them difficult to train as they have less knowledge and skills in their profession. “It’s essential that the Indian education system must strike a balance between practical and theoretical knowledge, along with this consider the broader spectrum of skills and competencies required for a well-rounded and adaptable workforce, “said Aggarwal.
