The much- awaited mango season has arrived and the people are savouring the juice and the pulp of their favourite fruit. However, health experts warn that consuming mangoes in excess may adversely affect health. If over-consumed, it can cause diarrhoea, severe indigestion and vomiting.
Dietician Richa Kukreti has warned people against overconsumption. “People love eating mango in the summer season and they tend to forget that consuming the fruit in excess might beget serious health problems. So, they should exercise restraint. They should be particularly alert while buying mangoes in May.
During this month, a large part of the mangoes that come to the markets are not natural ones. They are artificially ripened mangoes,” she said, adding that the elderly and young people should never over-consume mangoes. Another Dehradun-based dietician Renu Jain said that consuming anything in excess is bad. “Those having diabetes must control their greed for mangoes. The fruit has natural sugars which may make the blood sugar level soar if consumed in excess,” she said, adding that eating too many mangoes may lead to excessive weight gain. She advised people to eat mangoes indirectly through mango shake. She further said that before consuming mangoes, they should be soaked in water for a few hours.
