71 L persons recover in total, 62,077 in last 24 hours; active cases down to 7L
India’s recovery rate touched 90 per cent on Sunday with 62,077 persons having recovered from Covid-19 and discharged nationally in the last 24 hours even as the new confirmed cases stood at just a little over 50,000. Active cases also continued to remain below the seven-lakh mark for the third day in a row.
As many as 71 lakh persons have recovered from the infection with half of them hailing from the top four worst-affected States, which account for 44 per cent of the active caseload of the country, according to the data available by the Union Health Ministry.
The decline in new cases is in contrast to the resurgence of the infection in many countries like the US, Spain, France, and the UK among others. The United States, for example, reported more than 83,000 new cases on October 24, the highest single-day spike since July 16. France has reported more than 40,000 cases for the last two days even as curfew has been imposed there. Record levels are being reached in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom as well which are witnessing the second phase of Covid-19. Countries like Ireland and Britain are mulling a second lockdown.
In India, there are 6,68,154 active Covid-19 cases as on date, which accounts for 8.50 per cent of the total caseload, as per the Ministry. Seventy-five per cent of the new recoveries were observed to be concentrated in 10 States and Union territories —Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Delhi, Andhra, Assam, UP and Chhattisgarh.
Maharashtra leads the tally with more than 10,000 single-day recoveries.
Also, 79 per cent of the 50,129 fresh Covid-19 cases were reported from 10 States and Union territories. Once showcased as a role model for containing the virus, Kerala has emerged as the single largest contributor of new cases in the last two days, leaving behind Maharashtra. Kerala reported more than 8000 new cases while Maharashtra recorded 6000 cases for the last two consecutive days.
At one point of time, Maharashtra used to be not just the largest contributor, but also account for almost 40 per cent of the cases reported across India. That daily share has gone down below 15 per cent now, said the Ministry.
While 578 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours, nearly 80% of them are concentrated in ten States/UTs. Maharashtra has contributed the maximum to the new fatalities with 137 deaths.
Less than 1,000 deaths have been continuously reported for the last one week. The figure is below the 1,100-mark since October 2, said the Ministry.
Meanwhile, India’s Covid-19 testing laboratory network has inked another achievement. The total number of laboratories has crossed 2,000.
Starting from one laboratory in Pune, the number now stands at 2,003 — 1,126 Government-owned and 877 private — the Ministry stated.
