Kumaon commissioner conducts late night inspection of base hosp

In latest news from Uttarakhand, the Kumaon commissioner Deepak Rawat conducted a unannounced inspection of the Soban Singh Jeena Base Hospital in Haldwani in late hours, braving the spine-chilling cold.  Sources said that he had found several irregularities at the government-run health facility and looked quite disturbed. As he found both the doors leading into the wards locked with no guards on duty, he sent for the PRD officer and asked how people would get out in case any emergency happened in the wards.  Finding just two doctors on duty at the Emergency, Rawat called up the in-charge CMS. As he did not turn up despite the commissioner’s phone, he said despairingly that if the officer did not come despite being asked to come by him, he could not be expected to come to the Emergency to treat the ill or the injured brought there. Thereafter, he asked the city magistrate, SDM and Tehsildar to come to the hospital and said that unless he started going out on such surprise inspections in late night hours regularly things were most unlikely to change.
