Maharaj greets Ritu Bahri, hails UCC

In latest news from Dehradun, soon after being sworn in as the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand, Justice Ritu Bahri went into a huddle with the Governor Gurmit Singh, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the State tourism and culture minister Satpal Maharaj. They are understood to have discussed a number of things, particularly the Uniform Civil Code bill that is to be submitted in and passed by the assembly during the specially convened session.
After the meeting, Maharaj lauded the UCC initiative, saying that it was an imperative if the society was to be founded on the principle of gender equality. The UCC would transform marriage, divorce and adoption and inheritance norms, he said. Invoking the Article 44 of the Constitution, he said that the Fundamental Principles of State Policy under this article calls for promoting and establishing social and economic equality through the enactment of the Uniform Civil Code. He said that this Prime Minister-inspired initiative is all set to end gender inequality and discrimination in one go.
