MCD plans to supply green waste of Mandis to dairies in Doon

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start providing fruit and vegetable waste generated in the fruit and vegetable wholesale markets to dairy owners as livestock feed by February end to prevent it from getting dumped into the waste management plant. The corporation will also use this green waste to feed about 800 cows in its cattle shelters.
The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna informed that the corporation is currently in talks with the dairy owners to figure out how many of them are actually interested in getting green livestock feed from the Mandis. He said that though all the fruit and vegetable waste from the markets is currently being sent to the waste management plant where it does get disposed of properly, it will be more valuable to the cows and other livestock of dairy owners in the city. However, he added that it will be ensured that the cows are given only a hygienic supply and not the spoiled one that can cause them health issues. He stated that the teams of the corporations are currently working on getting data like how much metric tonnes of such waste is generated on a daily basis in various wholesale markets in order to meet the requirement of the interested dairy owners. “We started discussing this project only this week. We are currently collecting the required details and working on different aspects to properly execute this plan at the ground level. We are yet to decide how the vegetable waste will be sent to the dairy owners of different areas. The corporation is also considering initially supplying the green waste for free to the owners but nothing has been finalised yet. We are getting suggestions from team members on various concerns to ensure the proper execution of the plan once MCD starts supply to the dairy owners,” said Khanna. He said that the corporation will soon hold a meeting to finalise things and the supply of green waste will possibly start within two weeks or by the end of this month.
