Hearing on a public interest litigation challenging the government ordered ban on slaughter houses in Haridwar district, the Uttarakhand high court has questioned the validity of this decision. The court has not ordered an immediate stay on the government’s order and set July 23 for detailed hearing of this case. The matter was taken up for hearing by the division bench of chief justice RS Chauhan and justice Alok Verma.
According to the case details, the state government had issued a government order in March 2021, shutting down slaughter houses in the entire Haridwar district. Earlier, the prohibition was applicable only in religious places. Manglaur resident Iftikar and others filed a PIL challenging this decision of the state government. They have contended that the government can prohibit the sale of meat in religious places but not in the entire district. The petitioner has sought a stay on this order of the government considering the occasion of Bakri Eid on July 21. The high court division bench set the case for detailed hearing on July 23.
