The police on Sunday imposed a penalty of over Rs 90.8 lakh on 908 landlords in Dehradun for not getting their tenants verified as per the rules. The police took this action under the verification drive to identify unverified and suspicious people living in the district as part of the police’s preparation in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh informed that various police teams conducted door to door visits to check verifications of tenants, employees, domestic servants, street vendors and others belonging to other states and districts. During the massive verification campaign that lasted for five hours, the police verified and collected the personal information of a total of 5,871 people. The police also brought 315 suspicious people to the respective police stations after they failed to present any valid documents.
The police also collected a fine of Rs 41,250 from 151 suspicious persons under the Police Act. In the past two weeks, the police have taken action against about 2,000 landlords under the Police Act and imposed a penalty of about Rs two crore. Singh said that the police are committed to ensuring fair and safe conduct of Lok Sabha elections in peace and harmony. The drive is being conducted against unregistered people who can possibly disturb peace, law and order during elections. The police will continue the drive this week as well, he added.
