POLITICIANS, ACTIVISTS SUBMIT MEMO ON FOREST RIGHTS TO RAWAT

Leaders of various political parties and activists submitted a memorandum to former chief minister, AICC general secretary, and Congress Working Committee member Harish Rawat seeking measures for effective implementation of the Forest Rights Act 2006 in the state. Led by former Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyay, the group under the banner of Van Adhikar Jan Andolan (VAJA) visited Rawat at his residence in Dehradun. In the memorandum submitted to Rawat, Upadhyay and others thanked him for his contribution in the passing of all proposals related to forest rights in the PCC meeting held on July 24. He was also thanked for the various schemes introduced during his chief ministerial term for the betterment of the environment and welfare of the villagers. The memorandum listed six demands related to forest rights. The VAJA members demanded that the Forest Rights Act 2006 be implemented in Uttarakhand. They also demanded that in lieu of protection of forests, the people of Uttarakhand should receive one cooking gas cylinder and 100 units electricity free of cost every month. Further, the people of Uttarakhand should also receive the benefit of reservation in Central employment. In addition to this, the people of the state should also have access to wood, stone, sand, gravel, and soil free of cost. The State should also be given the right to its water resources, apart from which Uttarakhand should also be provided with a green bonus. In honor of those who had died in the Tilwadi movement, May 30 should be declared Forest Rights Day, demanded the activists. They said that due to environmental protection by many generations of Uttarakhand’s people, water resources from the state facilitate irrigation and drinking water in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and other places. The state’s environment also contributes to a considerable proportion of clean air. In return for this, the Government of India should sympathetically consider the six demands stated by VAJA for which they have sought Rawat’s help. Along with Upadhyay, SN Sachan of Samajwadi Party, PCC chief spokesman Mathura Datt Joshi, Jai Prakash Rs Uttarakhandi’ and others were among those present on the occasion. read more post… Monday, 06 August 2018 | PNS | Dehradun–
