RRCAT scientists develop TIG welding technique

Scientists from Raja Ramanna Centre For Advanced Technology (RRCAT), an R&D unit of the Department of Atomic Energy,have developed a unique Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding technique expected to be a game-changer in the welding industry. According to officials of the centre, TIG welding ensures precise control over the welding arc which results in defect-free weld metal under clean welding conditions. It produces minimal fumes and spatter compared to other welding processes which also makes it environment friendly.
The quality of the weld metal improves the service life of the pressure equipment and eliminates any need for re-works. This aligns with the growing global emphasis on eco-conscious manufacturing practices. TIG welding technology allows for joining of a wide range of materials including stainless steel, aluminium, titanium and copper, thereby expanding the scope of applications for MSMEs across various industries. TIG welding technology can significantly enhance productivity, quality and cost-effectiveness in their operations. TIG welding proficiency opens doors to a range of opportunities and unexplored possibilities in automobile, aerospace, pharmaceutical, fertiliser, petrochemical, nuclear and other process industries, the officials said.
