In light of the hot weather, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has directed educational institutions and sports academies across the State to install fire safety equipment on their premises. This directive comes in response to the increasing number of fire incidents in various districts of Uttarakhand due to the high temperatures. The chairperson of SCPCR Geeta Khanna stated that in light of reports of fires in the State due to soaring temperatures, she has instructed the commission officials to conduct a campaign and inspection at educational institutions and other places where children are present. She said that the commission recently conducted an inspection at Doon Sports Academy and found several safety issues like lack of air-conditioning, ventilation and proper exits, as well as the presence of inflammable materials. Following this, they summoned officials of the academy to the commission’s office for a hearing with all relevant documents. Khanna informed that regarding the inspection, she has instructed all educational institutions in the State to implement safety measures and install fire safety equipment on their premises.
The considerably high temperatures witnessed in various parts of the State this year have also been associated with incidents of fires in different parts of the State. These incidents have also elicited focus once again on the lack of fire safety measures in institutions which are meant to function with such measures in place.
